DEUTSCHE SPRACHSCHULE LONDON/ GERMAN LANGUAGE SCHOOL LONDON

SOME THINGS WE OFFER

Founded in 1959 and integrated with the Thames Valley District School Board since 1974, our school teaches presently about 200 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

We have 15 classes with an average of 12-15 students.

Elementary classes are divided into two streams: an English stream (E) for students with little or no exposure to German outside the school environment, and a German stream (D = Deutsch) for students with German background.  In E-classes the classroom language is initially English, with students gradually being encouraged to understand and express recurrent classroom themes in German.  In D-classes instruction and interaction are in German, the teacher only rarely taking recourse to English, e.g. in order to explain a difficult concept.

We also have a special Elementary Beginners' Class for older children who are not yet at the high school level.  After completing this class children will be integrated into Grades 6-9, according to their ability and age.

We have General and Advanced Credit Courses.  All Credit Courses are open to high school students and adults.

General Credit Courses (Grade 9-12) are for students who want to start German at the high school level or adults interested in learning German.  In our four-year program students have the opportunity to get a thorough training in oral and written German.  Emphasis is on activities that foster interaction, encourage students to use the language they are learning in speaking and writing, and develop listening and reading comprehension.

For Grade 12 adult students who feel comfortable with the basic structure of the German language we have a special Conversation Class geared to help them develop their oral skills.

Students who have learned German in our elementary program or elsewhere continue their studies in our Advanced Credit Courses where instruction is strictly in German, and where they are exposed to more challenging linguistic and cultural material.  In Grades 10, 11 and 12 students in Advanced Credit Courses also have the opportunity to prepare for one of the Federal Republic of Germany Accredited Examinations the school offers.

All students in Grades 9-12 receive the Ontario Credit in German upon successfully completing their annual course and passing the final examination.

MORE THINGS WE OFFER

Most classes participate in weekly Music Lessons where students under the guidance of a professional voice instructor get acquainted with the rich heritage of German folk songs.  We firmly believe that singing helps language learners to overcome their reluctance to utter foreign sounds and improves their pronunciation.

At special events such as our annual Christmas Celebration in December, the German Canadian Club's Christkindl Market in December and Day of Song in April, and our Last Day of School Party in early June students show their parents and guests what they have learned, through their performance on stage, by singing, acting or reciting poetry.

In Grades 10, 11 and 12, Advanced students can prepare for and write the following Federal Republic of Germany Accredited Examinations:

  • Central German Examination is evidence of a thorough basic understanding of German.
  • German Language Diploma I is evidence of the command of German expected at the Grade 10 level in Germany and is required for enrollment in a Vocational School in Germany.
  • German Language Diploma II is evidence of the command of German required for University entrance in Germany.

All high school students have the opportunity to participate in our Reciprocal Exchange Program with German speaking countries which includes at least 4 weeks school attendance in the host country.  Participating students receive a stipend towards their travel expenses.

In the second week of July we run a week long Summer Day Camp in German for children aged 4-10: supervised in- and outdoor activities include crafts, games, music and acting.

To find out more about us come and participate in classroom activities during our annual Open House Day on the last Saturday in February, from 9 a.m. – 12 noon at Wheable Centre for Adult Education, 70 Jacqueline St.
